Melbourne International Arts Festival 2008
24-25 October 2008
The Arts Centre, State Theatre
The premiere of The Black Arm Band's newest piece, Hidden Republic delves deeply into the songbook of contemporary Aboriginal music to reflect the renewed promise of 'post-apology' Australia. Collaborating with 33 members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and backed with a blistering seven-piece jazz section, Hidden Republic reveals the undiminished spirit in the music of Aboriginal Australia and songs which celebrate identity and understanding for all Australians.
'... a massive, inspiring joyful celebration of survival against odds, with a suitably sharp sting in its tail ... it takes on more of the character of a celebration rather than a fight. We have hope.' - Australian Stage Online
