'murundak' and Koorie Sounds at Wominjeka Festival - Footscray Community Arts Centre - Sat 21 & Sun 22 Jan 2012
5 December 2011
Join The Black Arm Band Company, performing murundak in the West for the first time. Since its premiere performance at the 2006 Melbourne Festival, murundak, meaning 'alive' in Woiwurrung language, has delighted audiences across the globe.
In an uplifting tribute to the inspirational Ruby Hunter, The Black Arm Band Company comes together to Wominjeka to perfromance an outstanding songbook of contemporary Aboriginal music. This historic msuical event re-orchestrates many anthemic works and couples them with gentle laments and infectious love songs to take audiences on a spiritual jounrey of contemporary Indigenous Australia.
More than a retrospective of songs, murundak tells the story of undiminishec spirit, a kind of secret but important social history of Australia. A tale of struggle and identity, sweat and blood, guitars and dusty roads. Don't miss the chance to see some of the most respected names in Australian music including Archie Roach, Lou Bennett, Shellie Morris, Bart Willoughby, Emma Donovan, Djolpa McKenzie, Mark Atkins and Stephen Pigram.
Arrive at twilight, settle in with a picnic rug and enjoy a program of great entertainment from 6pm including IDJA Dance Theatre, Koorie Tiddas Youth Choir, Mia Stanford and more! The Black Arm Band Company performance of murundak starts 8.30.
